5104.16
A Cover Letter to the United Nations

Assuming a person worked continuously without break or sleep, 5104.16 is the amount of days a person works in there lifetime assuming they start working at 16, retire at 65, have a 50 hour work week, and have 2 weeks worth of vacation (neglecting travel time). To put this number in perspective in 5104.16 days a single person travel around the world over 70 times in a boat, 340 times in a balloon, or 1750 times in a plane. Life might be measured in moments, but moments are measured in seconds, hours, and days. A job is the greatest opportunity cost an individual will partake in, one not to be taken lightly.

Furthermore throughout these 5104.16 days, humans will age greatly as their genetic makeup deteriorates leaving him/her yearning to capture an earlier time period. When a person is in college they yearn for the innocence of childhood. When a person is in their 40’s s/he yearns for the freedom and simplicity of when s/he was in the 20’s. When a person is the 80’s s/he yearns for the strength and vitality to be able to accomplish the tasks that s/he took for granted in the 40’s. Point to be considered: the most desired physical and mental time span of our life is largely spent working.

Fortunately I need not wait till my 40’s or 80’s to appreciate and understand the finite nature of my existence and the natural abilities that the almighty bestowed upon me. When looking at the dedication and time one puts into their career, it is simply not a means to obtain money. A career is the largest opportunity cost one will undertake short of pro-creation and it is also the most desirable period in a human’s life, this is undisputable. A career is an opportunity not only to sustain my livelihood but make an everlasting positive impact on my community, country, and world. I truly feel that there is no greater injustice to the world than the man that uses the gifts bestowed upon him exclusively for his own profitability.

In my adulthood I have thrown a hammer on construction sites, wrenched on automobiles and race cars, managed an eleven bay aftermarket service center, developed racing programs for an automobile drag strip, and typed code into web development programs. To all these jobs I enjoyed yet when reflecting on the past and looking into the future the positive impact on my surroundings was minimal.
